Red October Meet and Build

Last time I mentioned a meetup, it was checking out the local hobby shops "come and build models (mostly gunpla)" night. Like 10 people around 3 tables in the gaming area of a hobby store.

More recently, the local Gunpla specific club held a big meetup I think they do like every other month or so.  There was a theme of"hey bring your red or aquatic suits to show off/build" but you didn't have to, just a suggestion.  Still, I was eager to go, and I had a Lunamaria preordered that MIGHT just make it in on time.  Man, that lunamaria is a sweet looking kit.

Sadly, that didn't make it, so on my way over I stopped by the local barnes and noble, the only gunpla store within 25 minutes.  The only reddish kit they had was the Heine Westenfluss Destiny Gundam.  I had never seen the show and wasn't familiar with the person or the suit. Luckily, it looked pretty cool and slighly reddish, so I sprung for it thinking, what the heck.

Man am I glad I did. This turned out to be a sweeeeet little kit, I love how it looks. However, I wont be finishing it this post, we'll save that for another day. This is about the meetup, and I only got so far.

I arrived at the conference room of a local business I guess the people who run the club also work for and have an arrangement to use on certain Saturdays for club stuff.  The guys at the club were really nice - theres a small fee for food and then theres raffles and whatnot for extra, but they wave that for first timers.  I made sure to buy some raffle tickets anyway to help support the club, and then browsed all the kits on display before putting my tickets in for the two raffle prizes.

Some cool prizes, right? A PG red astray or a Pbandai Crossbone. I went mostly for the PG because I wont be buying one, I'm on a big high grade kick with a few MG or RG, but I just dont see buying a PG anytime soon for myself.

Anyways, I found an open seat and sat down, saying high to everyone and checking out what they were building. I didn't take pictures of everyone but there was a huge variety at my table, from a MG ball to a few high grades and someone getting just a bit further on their PG! We ended up with close to 30 people all things considered (Here's about 20, with some in another room and others filtering in later).  Excuse the editing out of the company logo, but not sure if they want to be identified.

But we happily built away and chatted while they played some funny vampire show (I think it was called "what we do in the shadows"). It had the "electric sex pants" boss from the IT crowd and another actor or two you might recognize. Eventually the pizza and wings showed up, where the kit building was put on hold for a bit. mmm mmmm mmmmmm!

After that we got back to watching more shows, switching to that Love, Death, and Robots thing on netflix (actually pretty good! each episode was a completely separate what if scenario, kinda like black mirror but robot centric). Some more progress was made before one of the organizers announced they had bought and collected a big old box of spare parts, broken kits, etc and people were free to take whatever from it, and they set it out in another room. Most people said "oh cool" and didn't bother checking it out. But about 7 people went nuts for it, and musta spent like 2 hours sorting through parts for perfect kitbashes and whatnot. It was a nice extra touch! Meanwhile I continued to gab and build away slowly. even at these group builds I like to nip, knife, sand low med and high, so I take my sweet time and get the most enjoyment time out of my kit.

Eventually it came time to pack up. I had only been for 5 hours, but it had started at 2 and went till 9, what a day! We put kits away, folded tables and said our goodbyes. Promises were made to organize a game of artemis bridge simulator for next time, as well as to get an organized group together to go to the Chars Counterattack showing that a local theater is having in December. As for my kit, I didn't get super far, but I had a lot of fun and met some cool people. Definitely a recommended activity!

Dont forget to check back for future posts for the end of this kits build, its a good one and looks super nice!
