HG MSM-07 Z'GOK
Starting out, I have mixed feeling here. Watching the shows and looking at the kits, the "roundarm" suits like the zgok, acguy, etc, were never my favorites. But I did want one underwater kit, these are just a recognizable and different looking suit that a collection has to have ONE.
And I found one for under 8 dollars that looked decent and super quick to build, so here it is:
I laughed pretty hard at one of those pictures. Can you spot it?
Yeah, the one flat faceplanted at the floor. After speculating if it was like "dead or destroyed", I just had to translate it (thanks, instant phone based google translate!). It came out to something like "cruise position in water". It seems really weird they didn't put it up off the ground on like an action base or something, but hey, you do you Bandai. Anyways, heres the other contents of the box:
TWO stickers, one of which is the eye, and the other I didn't put on yet and doesn't look to make a huge difference (I'm debating making that area glow or putting transparent colored acrylic there or something cool). And just three runners besides the polycaps. Looks to be a pretty quick build.
First, the legs: they're a big foot and a big ankle and then a bunch of circles covering short ball joints to make a slinky like leg.
They're a little bit of a paint to clear nubs on, since all nubs are on a curved surface. Even after the close cut, I have to do pretty careful knifework, then several grades of sandpaper since the colors really show any scratches. Even then, some slight discoloring sometimes remains, but that's just something I'll have to live with.
The waist/torse are just two quick front/backs with a ball joint to twist and balls to connect the legs. Quick and easy. I was pretty impressed with how the slinky legs held position and posed easily, even if with limited range. Also seen is a tease of the hands as I made what I think looks like a new megaman enemy.
The chest is pretty similar, but the extra internal dark blue bit adds texture and color and prevents stickers. The head is just a black piece and a lighter piece with a sticker for the eye. This is a bit dissapointing, as if you put the eye straight forward its semi blocked, so you want to put it to one side, it's there permanently. But I dont see a much better way in such an old, cheap HG.
Add some arms and two backpack jets and we're done! The arms are just like the legs, with added spike fingers. These hold position well and move individually to fully touch in the center or open wide for beam shots.
Of course you know what comes next, the photoshoot! I dunked it in water for extra realism, so enjoy the water droplets. The bendy bits worked better than I thought, easy to move and rotate and work well. And it even looks better than I thought. But its definitely an old kit, of course no accessories, a little hard to clean well, they eye is stuck in one position, it's bland/plain, and, well, i'm just not in love with the design even though it grew on me a bit.
If you love monoeyes, want a cheap and quick build, just like the suit, maybe want to do a diorama (especially water), are completing a collection of suits used at the same time, etc its not awful. But I wouldn't consider it a "get this" without a good reason, and it may even clash with the design aesthetic of some collections.
