HG RGM-79[G] GM Ground Type

My gateway gundam was 08th MS Team, so as you can imagine I've been waiting to do this kit.  The GM ground type, a classic, in wonderful colors. I just love the orange bandai uses on some of these kits (I also really wanted to get the test Bugu over the normal Bugu, but its over double the price and it's just a color change, so I can paint it if I want).

The GM ground type gets most of its fame from 08th MS Team, but was also in igloo2, a few different series of the varios mangas, and several of the games.  In the Universal Century, it was developed using early project V data, being first deployed almost a full month before the incident at side 7 (august 79).  While the RX-79G gundam ground type was developed using the same early data, it also used spare project V parts, setting them apart as "GUNDAM" units and also making them nearly impossible to mass produce.  Since this GM was developed from the same data, just with an equivalent design meant to pave the way for mass production, about 80% of the RGM-79G GM ground parts could be shared with its RX-79G GUNDAM ground relative (as seen with the infamous "GM head on a gundam" later in the 08th MST series).

Only 42 of these units were produced, with at least 12 in Southeast in the Kojima Battalion, where 08th MST takes place.  Three of these were converted to become the RGM-79G GM sniper (not to be confused with the later 79SC sniper custom).  They're both different kits to this, but basically the same thing except green and with different, long range weaponry (often with bulky external cooling/power packs).

These proved so effective and the data so valuable that these 42 soon gave way to the RGM-79 GM, the first REAL mass produced federation suit about 3-4 months after their first deployment.  Special thanks goes to the portable beam rifle with the federations new E-cap technology to eliminate recharge times by just loading more "ammo" .

Anyways, to the kit!  Unfortunately I somehow lost some of the early built pics, so we've just got some legs and then poses.  The legs are interesting though!  good articulation, I love the knee rivets, and BOTH SIDE HAVE HIDDEN BEAM SABER COMPARTMENTS.  I love it!

Some "I just built you" photos, and a look at the accessory list ( machine gun, bazooka, net launcher, two beam sabers, an arm mounted short shield that can stand on its own or extend from the arm with a cool pose-able connector).

And then some further poses poses. It stands rather well. The shield works better than I thought, both flexing around poses on the arm and separate. The net launcher is rather neat, and the folding stock machine gun is great. The shoulders did sometimes pull off of their posts while posing, but I don't really consider that a huge issue.

Note I didn't put most of the stickers on yet.

Now, it is a pretty basic GM, so many people will give it a miss. But that's a shame. The pose-ability, especially the arms, is decent but nothing to write home about. Its pretty blocky, which some like and some hate. But all around it's pretty solid, nice colors, cool accessories, and I love the legs with their knee rivets and the opening sabers. And the shield is really well done. If you liked 08th MST, if you like GMs, if you like orange kits, or if you're looking for a fun, quick HG, then take a look and consider adopting an RGM-79G GM Ground Type today!
